Helmet Head Blues Wearing a helmet is the law in most countries, and even if it weren't, its the smart thing to do! Sure tie it back, tuck it in and braid it ...yet that doesn't entirely solve the problem when the lid you've been wearing for a few hours, has been buffing, squeezing, causing you to sweat and further inhaling all the dirt /dust, small particles into your head space like a vacuum cleaner! And believe me, after I've spent a day of racing on the circuit..helmet on, helmet off, helmet on, helmet off and that sweat [pardon me, perspiration] ...I end up more with something that could sweep the floor than what u call hair on my head!...and baseball hats? forget it..last resort..don't know about you,but I look like geek in one of those! or shall we say a baseball player! :-) We all know that helmet head goes with the sport/ activity, yet, I'm certain there is not one rider that didn't or doesn't take their lid off and exclaim...yikes my hair and goes for the side mirror. Solution would be short hair? Not for all....and easy for the guys. I know many women also who would rather get rid of the problem than deal with it...yet with a little care, helmet head can be strapped! So here a few tips for the long and short of it .. DO use a headliner. These reduce helmet irritation, keeps helmet inner clean and absorbs 'perspiration' DO start your day with clean washed hair, this will tolerate the helmet's abuse much longer than hair that's dirty. DON'T use gels, mousse, wax or sprays when you know you'll have your helmet on for a long time. These don't mix well with the irritation and heat, causing extra dryness. DO bring your gel, mousse, wax or sprays along with you (travel sizes easy to carry/pocket). As your day progresses, these can aide in fast, effective 'fresh-up' bringing things back into style in a moment...say, in time for dinner? DO use hair products with grease in them (if you don't have oily hair) i.e. conditioning creams, leave in treatments, etc...not too heavy, yet enough to combat the dryness created by friction. DO tie back, braid and prevent the long hair from whipping in the wind, the old fashioned anti - knot method. DO use products with sunscreen. and of course DO wear a hat, this is the best cover up solution. And no, a baseball hat is not the only type. (sorry dat het in het Engels is maar ik hoop dat je er wat aan hebt) |
